Building!

We're building a house!!! Well, renovating. But practically building, because we're gutting an old house & adding on. Why? Because having a 4th baby just wasn't enough for us. So we just completed the first arduous process of creating floor plans and drawings & getting approvals from our city board (it's a tough neighborhood to build in!) Here we are marking trees that have to come down. I've always wanted to spray paint trees! We want to keep as many as possible, but THAT's a LOT of trees. Right? I hope to update the blog on the process, but...who are we kidding? I'm having a 4th baby in a few weeks, just moved in with my parents, selling our house and building another. I'm tired just thinking about it all!

Titus 2: Flower Arranging

Our church has a program called Titus 2 Women, based on the verse from Titus 2, which advises older women to teach younger women to love their husband & children, to be self controlled, pure, kind, submissive & hospitable. About once a month, we take a variety of topics that women are able to teach each other, meet in homes and just talk! Some topics are fun & "light," while others are more serious. In the past year (since it started), we've talked about foster care, forgiveness, hospitality, infertility, cooking, parenting, marriage, & raising a child with learning differerences. My friends Jana, Lauren, and Amanda each demonstrated several different styles & ideas. I love these nights!

Flowers in Mason Jars

I have some blue mason jars like this. Aren't they pretty? So simple & beautiful.

Here is even more inspiration on how to put those mason jars to use. (Unfortunately, I do not know the original sources for these above photos)

Lilac

I've been filing away photos that I found online of flowers that we have in our yard. Unfortunately, I don't know from where these images. But my lilac has started blooming in the past 2 days. Time to bring some indoors. Isn't this lovely?

Also in Bloom

You know what's a bad idea? Stuffing hyacinth branches into a cool old glass water container that you find left in your attic. Reasons: You will lose little flowers in there that you'll never be able to get out. Also, you can't clean the inside of the bottle. They don't make bottle brushes that long. It will be nice while it lasts though. Next spring, I'll just copy Emily Henderson (ps. have you seen her show? i haven't, but love her blog!) and do something like this with hyacinths:(above photo by emily henderson)
That's alright though. Because I LOVE SPRING! Also blooming in our yard - anemones, and more little bitty daffodils.

Hyacinths & Daffodils

Our yard is beginning to bloom! I love Spring. But...it seems like hyacinths & daffodils do not play well together in the same vase. The daffodils started to wilt right away. So now they are living in separate vases. Next up is lilac. Another one of my favorite smells!

Kitchen - Before & After

I ran across this picture of our old kitchen, before the wreck & subsequent renovation. (Look at that little kid. So cute!) And here it the kitchen as it looks now!Similar in many ways, but with a major facelift. It's fun to take a look back! And here's another shot, looking across the other direction in the kitchen. And now I have to squeeze this next picture in there for old times sake. The day after the wreck, Ethan (age 2 1/2) raced to get his tools to fix the damage!

Seasonal Spotlight: Asparagus

This morning, we picked this asparagus right out of our yard! I've been waiting for this moment - you aren't supposed to eat your asparagus for 3 years after you plant it. (Anyone know why? Anyone know what will happen if you do eat it early?) I can't remember exactly when we planted it, so I'm hoping we're on year #3. It popped up last April looking very tasty, but we didn't get to eat any. This year, Ethan has been eating it raw out of the garden!
Tonight it's going on our dinner plate though. Here are a few recipes that look great, and easy. Right up my alley.

Simple Steamed Asparagus.
Steamed Asparagus with Lemon Butter
Grilled Asparagus
Roasted Asparagus

And here are some of the reasons we should love asparagus. Want it in your yard too? It comes back for 15 years! Check it out!

Peonies & Random Thoughts

And so life goes on. Unless your house was one of the many that was extremely damaged, things just return to normal. What a weird week has this been. We do own a rental house which suffered damage, so we're trying to decide what to do about that. We're certainly not filing a claim on that one.

So now I'm returning to thinking about simple pleasures, like my peonies that are in bloom in the front yard. And wondering if my plants will bounce back from the 14 inches of rain we received in 2 days. And thinking about what kind of terrible timing it was for our camera to die the week before the worst flood in Nashville history. And hoping I get my creative blood flowing again soon. I am missing the boring little tasks of everyday life & looking forward to its' return.

FYI: Although a federal natural disaster is completely different than a car running into your house, here's my TOP 10 LESSONS LEARNED ABOUT INSURANCE CLAIMS, in case some of these things apply to some of you reading.

Wild Violet Arrangement

I love flowers in the house, but you know what I really love? Free flowers in the house! This floral designer, featured on Design*Sponge, shows how to use these "weeds" as a pretty arrangement. Free pretty stuff that God made: It's right up my alley. Enjoy!

Asparagus

A few weeks ago, these guys started sprouting up in the garden!!! Gardening is so cool!!! Ethan said, "Looks like Veggie Tales!" We can't eat the asparagus for another year, but they should come back every spring for about 7 years. I'm looking forward to eating them...in another year!

Lilac & Irises

Our yard is looking so colorful these days! A few years ago, we planted this row of irises along our fence. It's looking so lovely, alongside the most amazing-smelling lilac bushes! We are spending lots of time these days in our flower & veggie gardens. We're pretty optimistic about our veggie garden this year. I'll be posting pictures soon!

Any of you trying any new flowers or veggies this year? I'd love to hear about it!

Seed Update

My windowsill is crowded, but these little seeds are growing! It won't be too much longer before I can plant them & start more seeds outdoors.

Seed Starting

The seeds I have started in my Jiffy Seed Starting Kit (purchased at Wal-Mart) are looking fantastic! There are 2 varieties of heirloom tomatoes that I saved last year, plus heirloom seeds that I purchased (tomato, basil, red pepper), so I am excited to see green sprouts! My garden-advisor Karina recommends planting 2 seeds in each pod, and then trimming off one of the shoots when they reach about 2 inches. Although it is not necessary, this it to ensure that you have at least one seed in each pod. When the plants grow a second set of leaves, they are ready to move into another pot to continue indoor growth.

In addition, Lance has been working hard out in the yard, tilling up additional ground for the garden. I can't wait to get these in the dirt. Our garden is coming along well so far!

Bat Houses

Did you know that a single brown bat can catch hundreds of mosquito-sized insects an hour? We're thinking about getting a bat house. Any of you friends know anything about this? I must admit, I do not want to ever see a bat, but the idea of no mosquitoes sounds pretty great. They don't bother me too much, but they love the boys in this household.

Added Note: I have since learned that our neighbor just put up a bat house. However they said it usually takes a few years for the bats to find it. Hopefully they find it soon, and we can benefit from their mosquito-eating skills!

Seeds

Our seeds came in from Seed Savers Exchange, a non-profit that preserves heirloom seeds. Although E usually avoids the camera like the plague, he insisted on hopping in front of this picture.
Finally I got a picture. We ordered the following heirloom seeds: Scarlet Nantes Carrots, Detroit Dark Red Beets, Arugula, Cilantro, Pride of Wisconsin Melon, Sweet Genovese Basil, Napolean Sweet Pepper, Dragon Carrot, and German Pink Tomato. Last year, I also saved some seeds myself, which I have no idea how they will turn out, but I thought it was worth a shot. They are: Cherokee Purple Tomatoes (which Karina introduced me too, and they are DELICIOUS), white eggplant, some yellow heirloom tomatoes, and lemon cucumbers. Yesterday, I started my tomato, basil, and red pepper seeds indoors. I'm ready for Spring!

A Season of CSA

As CSAs prepare to resume for their regular 2010 growing season, I thought I would post a recap of what we received in 2009. These are half bushel shares for Avalon Acres CSA. The season runs May - October. They also offer many other options, including meat, eggs, baked goods, and a winter csa. Although I am a big advocate of CSAs, I do not say that they are best for every family. They are tons of fun, and tons of work. Read my complete list of pros and cons here. Another disclaimer: CSA bushels vary from week to week, year to year, and family to family. Two years ago we received tons of okra. This year we received none. So below should give you an idea of the variety, although not a complete picture.

If there is a link that is wrong (i can't spend any more time on this!), check out the csa labels in the righthand column, or click here.

Ethan's Room - Before & After

Here is Ethan's room just after we started the renovation. We knocked out this door to attic space, and added it to E's room.
There is more to the room not visible here, but this is how we reframed the walls.
And after! I have a few more projects I'd like to do (repaint the chair, possibly paint the lamp, etc) but I'm going to sit tight for at least another month. :)

Before & After - Kitchen

I know y'all have seen my kitchen photos, but I found a new "before" picture which shows another angle. I think B&A's are most fun when you can see the before. Our kitchen was so small that it was hard to back up and take a photo. But this is from the "eating room." Here are some other close ups of our kitchen before.
As you can see, we moved a door, knocked down a few walls, and made a ton of other dramatic changes. All because a car ran into our house. Life deals you surprises.
One year after we've moved back in, I can say it was worth it. We love our renovations & i love being in here cooking all day (which absolutely feels like the truth most days.) I love the lighting fixture that was originally our house's flour sifter.

Before & After - Bed Nook

This is one of my favorite spots in our house! When we renovated, Lance used the dormer spaces to add closets and this fabulous bed nook! Kids love this space when they come over. Here's how it looks: (well, before the kids start throwing the pillows around). Here it is:
