A few weeks ago, these guys started sprouting up in the garden!!! Gardening is so cool!!! Ethan said, "Looks like Veggie Tales!" We can't eat the asparagus for another year, but they should come back every spring for about 7 years. I'm looking forward to eating them...in another year!

Why can't you eat them for another year? I don't understand...

Oh good. I'm glad I'm not the only one curious as to why you can't eat them immediately.
well, i wish i had more insight into the reasoning, but i really don't know! all i know is that the interwebs, and my friend marge say i can't eat them until next year.
if anyone reading knows the answer, please tell me!
Found this online, because I'm a nerd.
Do not harvest asparagus the first growing season after planting crowns. It can be harvested (cut) for short time (not to exceed two weeks) the second or third year. Weak plants and small spears result from harvesting too much, too early. After the second year after planting crowns, harvest asparagus from 6 to 8 weeks each year. Weak plants should be harvested for less time, according to North Carolina State University, Department of Horticultural Science.
