Articles like this make me angry, but also confirm my suspicions about the chemicals & toxins in our air and in our food. I just ran across this in Time magazine. An extensive study does link the use of pesticides with an increase in ADHD in children.
If you follow the links in the online article, you can see that plastics are linked to developmental problems, as well as a myriad of other household toxins that cause problems. Sometimes I feel like I'm viewed as a crazy mom who doesn't put bug spray on my children, but this just reaffirms my viewpoints.
Thoughts anyone?

so, i am curious....we are heading the lake next weekend. there are pretty heavy woods all around and are obviously tons of bugs. the grownups usually use the deepwoods stuff to ward off ticks, chiggers among other things. in a situation like this what would you put on your kids? nothing? i would prefer nothing but dont want them to get eaten and deal w/ a 4 yr old and baby with tons of bites. thoughts?
Well, I'm rarely a tee-totaler on any subject. (How do you spell that anyway?) if it's a really buggy situation, go for it. But in general, i just let them deal with some bug bites. A few mosquito bites is not the end of the world! I dealt with it, they can too!!!
have fun at the lake!!!
Hey Carrie- I'm with you on feeling sometimes like I'm over-reacting on being anti-chemicals. It can be overwhelming to me too, and can feel like it's hard to avoid which is depressing. I'm trying to just make the best choices available to me at the time and try not to stress out about what I can't control (like using chemically treated bed nets for malaria at home or spraying to control mosquitos). I hate the idea of all of us being exposed non stop to chemicals, especially in our food sources.

Have you heard of skin so soft? I think it's by Avon and that's what my mom recommends. She is a Tom's deodorant wearing, no chemicals on the lawn, etc. etc. I don't use Off or harsh bug sprays on my kids b/c Walker had an allergic reaction to it the one time I put it on him this summer, but my kids have sensitive skin and their bug bites become huge whelps. We haven't really had a problem with bug bites this summer though. My kids go to bed so early that we're not outside at night very often.
I don't think that you are crazy at all! It is disconcerting that there are so many harmful toxins in countless household products, cleaning supplies, our food, etc. It does not make sense to me that these chemicals are so prevalent and that so little testing is done to determine their health effects. I really appreciate (and am inspired by) your careful approach to what your family is exposed to. It really is a lovely thing, Carrie.
I would suggest using california baby insect repellant, all natural. i have 4 kids from 11yrs. down to 3 months, and use it on all of them works great. can get it at diapers.com or babies r us.cost about 13.00 for 6 ozs. but worth it.dont like to put anything on the kids that might get in their mouth or soak in skin.
