Oh Boy
We fell in love with an old house. Now, just in time for Valentine's Day, we are falling in love all over again with an old house modernized. The crash fast-forwarded a ton of upgrades to our house that we wanted to do in 5-10 years. (Since we had to tear out the plaster, we went ahead and rewired the house; since we had to put down new hardwoods, we refinished all the floors to make them match; since we had to rip out the ceiling for repairs, we added lighting; since we had to rip out our back steps, we added a deck instead of replacing them, etc, etc.) Here are some current pictures of why I love it so!
Current picture of our kitchen. The grout isn't on yet, so it won't be that dark between the tiles, although I did go with "Mushroom" color grout, instead of white.
We made this room larger by including some attic space & unused dormer space & made a built-in bed nook.
We love the phone nook, but had it wired so that we could put an actual phone there! Found this cordless vintage-style phone from Pottery Barn on ebay.

Wow! I understand your emotions about that house. The new work looks amazing and the house is going to be so you! My accolades to you all for dealing so well with the hands you were dealt in 2008 and I pray that 2009 will be so much easier. The great news about Ethan seems to be a blessed FIRST for '09. We are so thankful to God for hearing our prayers and finding it in His will to give us the answer we want.
Carrie - Just wanted to say that I think your blog is so interesting! From major home repairs to allergies to bday crafts ... I'm so inspired! I also really like your writing style, for whatever it's worth. Thanks for giving this urban girl a glimpse into your colorful suburban family life. :) Hope you're well!
I love the subway tile! We have a couple boxes of that same tile (or a very similar one) left over from when we did the upstairs bathroom, and we were planning to use it as a backsplash also!
Yours looks awesome!
"Seth" is actually me! Sorry...wrong account.
aww shucks, merritt! thanks!!
