Irene's Coat

I've been enjoying winter in my grandmother's coat. In 2009, my grandfather died (at 96 years old!), leaving a house full of a lifetime's possessions. It wasn't much, it wasn't fancy, but his things were left to be divided among his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He lived in Texas, so we flew in and were the last to go through the house to see if there was anything of my grandparents that we would like to keep. There, hanging in their closet was this beautiful cashmere & fur lined coat. I had a few minor alterations made & it's beautiful!
My grandparents. The necklace from these pictures was also my grandmother.

Beautiful! Grandmother would have been thrilled. She was the most industrious woman I knew and used her creativity for so many different things: refinishing furniture using wax shoe polish for a rich surface color, cooking-using cut off bread crusts for a delicious french toast snack (just use bread crusts for a french toast, dipping the crusts in a sweetened batter), all kinds of paper mache figures, spool dolls, light bulb head dolls, patchwork quilts in a matter of a few days. She taught children to read with clever methods, cut boys hair while she taught them to read, and even made a coffin once for a baby who died in the country community she lived in as young woman. Oh yes, she learned to play the violin and sang and played the guitar and harmonica and organ and was a songwriter. She'd love that you altered and are using her coat. Mom

Carrie,

The coat looks great and like your Mom said she would love that you remade somthing. SHe recieved such joy when ever she was able to do that. When I got married one of my bridemaids had an emergency and was not able to be part of my wedding. Grandmother was able to rework the dress that had fit a curvy girl to fit Liz in less than a day. Enjoy the coat I know she would be pleased.
