Recently I found a nice little $8 mirror at a yard sale. So I joined the legions online who have made magnetic chalkoards!
Added Note: For how to's, check out thse blogs: she paints directly onto a mirror, while these guys paint onto a magnetic surface.
First, we painted the border, then added 3 coats of magnetic paint and finally, a coat of chalkboard paint.

Voila! Not the most magnetic thing in the world, but we're loving it!

Great idea!!!
LOVE this!!!
Molly & I haven't been "yard-saleing" lately b/c we've been so busy. We have some catching up to do!!!
that is adorable!!! love the frame you found. i wish i had a spot for one.
It looks great, Carrie! I may have to copy that one, but could you explain a little more about why it's not that magnetic? We have a stainless steel refrigerator. To my chagrin, and Josh's great delight, it is not magnetized. Therefore, we cannot cover it with messages and pictures as I would like. Something like you made might fill the void!
I followed instructions below. MAKE SURE YOU SHAKE THE MAGNETIC PAINT VERY WELL! The magnetic stuff goes to the bottom of the paint can. Also, we 'primed' the chalkboard before we used it for the first time, by rubbing a piece of chalk across it lengthwise & wiped it clean.

It works with very strong magnets. And the chalkboard works beautifully. Ethan loves it!
ALso, I really love that ours was a full length mirror, because Ethan can draw on the bottom half.
Mine was painted directly on the mirror, but I've also seen people who cut from a metal backing. Like this one: http://www.designspongeonline.com/2009/02/diy-project-magnetic-chalkboard-mirror.html
If you search for "Magnetic Chalkboard" on ohdeedoh.com, or designspongeonline.com there are lots of other fun projects that pop up as well.
